Good morning everyone. Next Monday is our Club Assembly to introduce and swear in our new officers for next year. It will be a lovely event and I hope you can attend to support our new officers as they begin their duties July 1st.

Attached, find an invitation to attend  a July 31st  event in Columbia honoring Ray Klinginsmith our new RI President from Kirksville along with new Missouri Rotary Club Presidents. It would be nice if our club is represented at the event. Let Mary or me know if you would like to attend.

Split One Candy Bar ...

Candybar
... and save a child from the polio virus.

A half of a candy bar might not seem like a big deal. But consider a child who needs the polio vaccine. Just think: For the same price, you can save that child from polio through the Rotary Foundation. And, to you, it's no big deal. It's a better deal.

Saving a life costs less than you think. Go to www.rotary.org/foundation.

So You Think You Know Missouri

Danner
You do, but not as well as Katie Steele Danner, director of the Missouri Division of Tourism and guest speaker at today's Jefferson City Rotary Club meeting. Employing about 300,000 people, tourism is second only to agriculture as Missouri's largest employer, and Danner's job is to introduce Missouri, especially to folks in our eight neighboring states.

For many, the introduction will come through Missouri's Tourism ad campaign, which you can sample at http://www.hlmediaworks.com/stayclose. The light-hearted campaign plays to potential tourists looking for value close to home, and makes use of social and interactive media as well as the more traditional television and print.

Danner also discussed the Division of Tourism's plans for the upcoming 150th anniversary of the Civil War (did you know there are 35 Civil War battlefields in Missouri?) and development of a film tour including filming sites for such movies as Up in the Air and Winter's Bone, winner of the top prize at this year's Sundance Film Festival.

Get An Early Start

Nicastro

Good advice any time, but absolutley esssential when educating a child, said today's Jefferson City Rotary Club speaker, Dr. Chris Nicastro, leader of the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. The vast majority of brain development occurs before a child enters school, she said, and pre-kindergarten education can provide "a quality start to a lifetime of learning."

Early childhood education for 3- and 4-year-olds is among four department goals discussed by Dr. Nicastro. The others: rank Missouri among the top 10 states in education (currently our state is in the middle among the 50 states); recruit, prepare and support quality teachers and administrators; and improve the department's efficiency while achieving high standards.

A teacher and administrator in Missouri public schools for 33 years before becoming the state's first female Commissioner of Education in 2009, Dr. Nicastro said that although she no longer stands before a class on a daily basis, "in my mind I still get to see those bright, eager faces every day."

Hello everyone. It’s already Friday  and we’re halfway through June. Next Monday is Flag Day, then Fathers Day, then the First Day of Summer. Although I thought it already was summer!

Our speaker next Monday is Dr. Chris Nicastro, Commissioner of the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

She is the first woman to hold this position and is a past superintendent of schools in St. Louis County. She will speak about budgetary issues and challenges facing our public schools during this budget crisis.

Plan on joining us for good fellowship and another great program.
