It’s a Family Affair

Pinkel_jcrotary

Mizzou Football Coach Gary Pinkel stressed the importance of team as family in his remarks to the Jefferson City Rotary Club on May 24. Tiger football players are constantly encouraged to protect the team family and to live up to expectations that include a good attitude, no excuses, hard work ethic and leaving selfish motives behind while focusing on the team.

Pinkel discussed creation of a family atmosphere through building relationships among coaches and players and establishing core values that include honesty, respect for women, freedom from drugs and respect for cultural differences. Click below for the complete audio of Coach Pinkel’s remarks.

. . . and Bulldogs and Bears and Cyclones and Wildcats and, yup, even Jayhawks. Be sure not to miss this Monday’s Jefferson City Rotary Club meeting, when our guest will be University of Missouri Football Coach Gary Pinkel, who has taken Mizzou to a school-record five straight bowl games (and counting).

See you at noon Monday, May 24 at the Miller Performing Arts Center.

Way to go Sheriff Greg White!

Kudos to Rotarian Sheriff Greg White as he has been chosen to receive the 2010 Distinguished Alumni Award from the Jefferson City Public Schools Alumni Association.  Greg will honored at a banquet at 6 pm on May 20th at the Capitol Plaza Hotel.  I'm sure Greg would be honored to have his Rotarian friends join him that night.

Today's Program

Alice Longfellow of Longfellow's Garden Center shared tips for developing your green thumb. A few highlights:
  • Feed your lawn and garden organic matter - compost, for example - to have healthy soil and plants for the long term.
  • Chemicals can address specific problems, but don't let your soil, lawn and garden become chemically dependent.
  • Traps and repellents such as castor bean oil are both effective in controlling moles.

Remember to join us next Monday when our guest speaker will be Missouri Tigers Football Coach Gary Pinkel. See you then!

The month of May is flying by. Graduations, weddings, the ending of the legislative session, and the planting/replanting of gardens are all in full swing.

So you need to plan on joining us Monday for our program, “How does your garden grow?” presented by Alice Longfellow from Longfellow Garden Center. I know I can use all of the help I can get in nurturing my feeble gardening efforts.

The end of our Rotary year is also approaching. Programs through June include:

Monday, May 24 – Preview to Tiger Football 2010, Gary Pinkel, Head Coach of the Mizzou Tigers

Monday, May 31 – Memorial Day, no meeting

Monday, June 7   – Angel Flight, Chip Gentry, Pilot

Monday, June 14 – Issues in Education, Chris Nicastro, Commissioner of the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education

Monday, June 21 – Tourism in Missouri, Katie Steele Danner, Director of Tourism, State of Missouri

Monday, June 28 – Club Assembly, New Officer Installation Ceremony

I’ve also attached an invitation to a Rotary “Strike out Polio” event at the Detroit Tigers Vs. Kansas City Royals baseball game, June 6th.

Have a great weekend and see you on Monday,

Steve

How Does Your Garden Grow?

Having trouble with pesky critters eating your flowers or produce in the garden?  Are you wondering what kind of grass to plant that will grow in the shade?

All these questions and more will be answered by our speaker on Monday, Alice Longfellow, owner of Longfellow's Garden Center.  Whether you have a green thumb or not, everyone will enjoy her presentation.
